Money and Currency

The Hong Kong dollar is the eighth most traded currency in the world.

The Hong Kong dollar (HKD) is the currency of Hong Kong, pegged to the US dollar at HK$7.75-7.85. Under the governance of Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA), three commercial banks issue the city’s banknotes. They are HSBC, Standard Chartered Bank, and Bank of China.

Hong Kong dollar notes include $10, $20, $50, $100, $500 and $1,000.

Hong Kong dollar coins include 10c, 20c, 50c, $1, $2, $5, and $10.

There are trusted money exchangers in Hong Kong that are accredited by the Quality Tourism Scheme (QTS). Currency exchange counters are also available at Hong Kong International airport.  ATMs are also available in many places providing 24-hour cash withdrawal (in HKD) for Visa and MasterCard holders.

In addition to Hong Kong local currency, traveller's cheques are accepted by most leading banks and hotels. International credit cards such as American Express, VISA, Diners Club and MasterCard are also welcome at many hotels, retail shops and restaurants.
