During the British Colonial era, English was the sole official language of Hong Kong. Later the Hong Kong people demanded equal status for Chinese, and Cantonese became the de facto official language.
The majority of the people in Hong Kong are bilingual. They speak Cantonese, which originates from Guangzhou in Guangdong province, and English. After the 1997 handover, Mandarin has also become an important language and is widely used on the streets and in businesses.
