“Ding Ding” is the colloquial term for Hong Kong’s iconic double-decker tram that refers the double bell ring streetcar drivers use to warn incoming traffic and pedestrians. To the Hong Kong people, the Tram is a century-old gem that remains the most inexpensive and leisurely mode of transport in the city. Every day the ride is enjoyed by hundreds of thousands of city dwellers and visitors from all over the world. While the streetcar may not travel as fast as the popular MTR, it is a great option for those who want to do some brilliant sightseeing of lively street life and scenery on a budget!
Since its inception in 1904, the tram system has had its share of changes and challenges. In the early days of its founding, all tramcars were single-deck and designed by class. The concept of a fixed vehicle path was relatively new at the time, and issues surfaced when people were often found blocking the road and free-riding the service. Today, Hong Kong has the largest fleet of tramcars in the world and is the only tram system that utilizes the double deck design, with 2 antique tramcars still in operation.
