Hotel Corner

Rainy Chan, General Manager of The Peninsula Hong Kong

Rainy Chan, Regional Vice President of The Peninsula Hotels and General Manager of The Peninsula Hong Kong, gives us some insights on running one of the most prestigious hotels in the city.

I was born and educated in Hong Kong. I began working at a major hotel’s front desk in Hawaii in 1989. Since then I’ve been working in the hospitality industry because I love working with people.

Hong Kong has a much faster pace than the United States and Thailand, two countries where I’ve worked before. It’s so fast that you really have to run to keep up, but this speed and efficiency really makes you think outside of the box to be creative.

Witnessing the success of The Peninsula Hong Kong’s 85th anniversary gala is definitely the most remarkable moment of my career. It felt like working painstakingly on an art piece for months and finally seeing it come to life. It was really exciting and encouraging to see our staff’s enthusiasm and happiness for this milestone event as well.

I’m a people leader – while I believe in the power of people, it’s also important for the leader to have a vision. At the end of the day, you make decisions for the best interests of your organisation, and if your people are happy, then it means you’ve done the right thing.

The Peninsula Hong Kong has been the landmark of Tsim Sha Tsui since day one. We’re well established and even our afternoon tea has been around for decades. Our responsibility is to highlight the district’s uniqueness, such as mapping out all the eateries, as there’re always hidden gems.

Nowadays, our guests expect much faster response even before they arrive at the hotel. They expect information they cannot find on google, as well as special access to something new and exclusive. At the same time, their need for personalised service and special attention remains unchanged.

Our commitment to quality service is well established, and we always strive to maintain the high standard. We’ve spent HKD 450 million renovating and enhancing our rooms with even better facilities. Also, with its state-of-the-art audio-visual technology, the Conference Centre is definitely appealing to those who come here for business.

Travelling in Hong Kong is extremely convenient. With just three days in Hong Kong, you can see a lot more than any other city; and it’s also very safe here. I like visiting the lesser known parts, such as authentic local restaurants and the outskirts. I’d recommend visitors to explore the Geopark in the New Territories to witness first-hand some of the most picturesque locations in the territory.
