Raymond Suen

Title: Chief Concierge, JW Marriott Hotel Hong Kong

Hotel industry career: 26 years
About Me: I have been in the hotel industry for 26 years, over 90% of which I spent at the JW Marriott Hong Kong. I became a concierge after spending a year as a baggage assistant. My father used to bring me to some of the city’s better hotels when I was young; it made an impression on me as I felt they were so elegant and thought that it would be a great place to work.  Also, I’m an outgoing person who likes to engage with people, so the hotel industry has suited me just fine.
Favourite Hong Kong activity: When I was young, I liked roller-skating with my family. It has stayed with me as a hobby ever since, something I still enjoyed doing.

What I like about Hong Kong: Hong Kong is an amazing yet small place. It’s so convenient to get around because of its superb public transport. Hong Kong is rich in both Chinese and Western cultures; visitors can experience  only city’s distinct and  diverse cultures. Part of that is the city’s rich food culture. My favourite thing to do in Hong Kong is to seek out different restaurants because Hong Kong is known as the “Food Paradise” and explore all kinds of cuisines.
My Recommendation: Man Mo Temple and Hollywood Road. Man Mo Temple, first built in 1848, is a favourite sightseeing landmark for both tourists and local residents.  On Hollywood Road around from the temple, you can see old and new Hong Kong buildings coming together. PMQ further down the road and Central Market nearby are both worth visiting. The PMQ features many local shops selling products and designs created by young people, illustrating the ongoing changes in the city’s culture in recent years.

Bonus Recommendation 1: Observation Wheel and AIA Vitality Park at the Central Harbourfront. It now only costs $20 to ride the Ferris wheel which is a real bargain. The view from the observation wheel is quite stunning and different. And the AIA Vitality Park offers wellness activities and games for kids.
Bonus Recommendation 2: Jogging or walking on Bowen Road. The well-known jogging trail located at the Mid-levels offers panoramic views of the city. The trail itself is mostly flat and fit for all ages. There is an easy and direct path from our hotel to Bowen Road. Many of our hotel guests from overseas walked the trail regularly for exercise once they learned about it.
Extra Tip: Finally, before you go out, approach the concierge desk for the latest updates on Covid-19 restrictions. And for our staycation guests, let us work with you to work out the best program to enjoy all the facilities our hotel offers with the least amount of hassle, especially during busy times. It’ll make your hotel stay that much more rewarding.
