Hong Kong on Camera

Rugged Mountains, jagged coastlines, sandy beaches, spectacular harbour, overlapping skyscrapers, people, and more people: Hong Kong is a paradise for professional and amateur photographers alike. And it’s the contrast of urban and natural beauties that produces memorable images. Summer time is particularly good for taking nice photos because the city’s air tends to be clear, thanks to prevailing southwesterly winds. So whether it’s your cell phone or you fancy SLR lens digital camera with wide-angle lenses, go check out our recommended spots and bring home with you memorable images of Hong Kong.

1. View from Ngong Ping 360 Cable Car

The Ngong Ping 360 Cable Car ride from Lantau Island’s Tung Chung to Ngong Ping Village and Big Buddha is a major tourist attraction in itself. The ride can be exhilarating and even thrilling for some. Better yet, the panoramic views of the mountains, the sea, and the Hong Kong International Airport below are spectacular in all directions, a perfect example of Hong Kong combining all its elements of nature and men.

2. View from Ocean Park’s Cable Car

This cable car ride is not as long, but it is just as enthralling. As the route is right on the water’s edge going up a steep mountain, the view of Middle Island, and Deepwater Bay close by with Repulse Bay in the background provides riders with a rare photo opportunity of one of the most glamorous parts of the city.

3. Sai Wan Pier, Kennedy Town- Mirror of the Sky

The pier is part of the Western Cargo Working Area and a well-known spot for local photographers. The reason: besides taking beautiful pictures of the sunset, you can take visually stunning pictures of reflecting images from a water puddle right at the water’s edge formed after it’s rained. The photos speak for themselves.

4. Nam Sang Wai, Yuen Long, New Territories

A wetland area north of Yuen Long, Nam Sagn Wai is a tranquil retreat perfect for hiking, cycling, bird watching and photo shooting. There are so many rustic and natural photo-ops to choose from- perfect for a half day outing.

5. View from Harbour Cruise

It’s real treat to take a harbor cruise dinner on a clear night and enjoy the magnificent Victoria Harbour and the famous Hong Kong skyline. Great photo-ops abound; our favorite is when the boat is on the eastern part of the harbour coming back to the city and you can get a gorgeous view of Hong Kong Island with Central Plaza in Wanchai as the focal point.

6. Sunset from Bauhinia Square or The Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club

A golden sunset framed by Hong Kong’s fabulous harbour, flanked by the International Finance Centre (IFC) and the International Commerce Centre (ICC) on either side, and with mountains in the distance- you cannot get a better sunset photo than this. Location: The Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club in Causeway Bay or, failing that, the Bauhinia Square outside of the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center.

7. sky100 Observation Deck

A bird’s eye view from the sky100 is pretty much the best way to capture this spectacular city, from all angles. On a clear day, panoramic views of Hong Kong, Kowloon, and the distant mountains are all laid out below your feet- a truly mesmerizing sight.

8. Nathan Road Neon Heaven

Before neon signs disappear the way of dinosaurs be sure to get a night shot of Nathan Road, Kowloon’s main street where buildings with glittering neon signs line the street for miles. If possible, take a bus that travel on Nathan Road, sit in the front seat on the upper deck and click away.

9. Red Light Crossing near Sogo

Causeway Bay is the shopping district on Hong Kong Island and it is filled with shoppers and diners pretty much at all hours of the day. The key traffic light and pedestrian crossing on Hennessey Road outside of Sogo is one of the busiest in the city. Go to a pedestrian bridge nearby for a great overhead shot of concentrated humanity.

10. Oil Street Art Displays

The little hidden gem located in Fortress Hill on Hong Kong Island has turned into a most interesting local art space with its street art displays. It promises to be a visual feast and a paradise for cool photo shots.
