We show off Hong Kong’s food diversity and makes the case for why the city is one of the great culinary capitals of the world
Naturally, As one of world’s top travel destinations, Hong Kong has much to offer, and much of it well-described and welldeserved: east meet west culture, its colonial legacy and heritage, the stunning harbour and world famous skyline, reputation as a shopping mecca, and quality food offerings, starting with Hong Kong local food and Cantonese seafood. And speaking of food, while Hong Kong is widely recognised as a culinary destination, one can argue that the diversity, depth and quality of its dining excellence is still under-marketed and underappreciated, crowded out by other alluring images of Hong Kong.
To say that Hong Kong has a strong food culture would be overly modest – for local people, food culture is perhaps the defining element of our DNA and dining out and
trying out new cuisines and dishes is in our blood. The city’s limited living space certainly encourages holding social gatherings and formal meals outside the home, with restaurants taking on the role of local hangout; our role as an international business and trading hub and one of the world’s freest port encourages new culinary infusions; and the city’s large expatriate population from the world over ensures a healthy diversity of culinary choice. With over 11,000 restaurants offering a staggeringly wide array of cuisines, quality, service and prices, Hong Kong is the perfect place for hungry visitors to either get adventurous or, if already homesick, to hunt out some home town cooking.
To help maximise the enjoyment for your adventurous taste buds, CityLife has selected a broad sample of signature dishes from different cuisines ranging from Hong Kong local food, Chinese regional cuisines, regional Asian varieties, and international cuisines. Bon appetit!
