JFOODO Brings Good Fortune Fish From Japan To Celebrate Chinese New Year With A Unique Pop-up Experience

Hong Kongers can enjoy the fresh taste of the finest Japanese fish as well as boost their luck during the festive period

It’s no secret that Hongkongers love sushi. Last Chinese New Year, JFOODO, the Japan Food Product Overseas Promotion Center, expanded our sushi horizons beyond the consumption of staple favourites to include sea bream, yellowtail and scallop – all of which have luck boosting properties that are perfect for any Chinese New Year celebration. This year, JFOODO is set to indulge our passion for sushi even further with an interactive pop-up and tasting event at elegant Japanese restaurant, Shikigiku in IFC Mall, just before the lunar festivities begin.

Taking place from 25th – 27th January, the Japan’s Good Fortune Fish Tasting experience will welcome sushi fans and Japanese cuisine lovers to sample an exquisite tasting menu, prepared by a Japanese chef, as well as learn more about the three fortune fish – sea bream, yellowtails and scallop – and their association with good fortune in Japanese culture. They can also take part in interactive games and activities that bring to life the benefits of the fish and offer insights into Japanese culture. A special tasting menu will be served at a number of different time slots, allowing customers to sample a variety of ways to savour the taste of these lucky fish. With Chinese New Year just around the corner, there’s no better opportunity to learn more about the fish and, more importantly, boost your luck by consuming them.

The Japan’s Good Fortune Fish Tasting pop-up experience forms part of a wider campaign (#同享開運魚) to reinforce the fortuitous properties of these three fish over the Chinese New Year period . The campaign includes a city-wide advertising and PR campaign as well as the launch of an interactive website “88 reasons why you want to eat lucky-fish” (https://seafood-jfoodo.jetro.go.jp/88reasons/), which offers a fun and engaging way to interact with the three lucky fish to understand both their luck and health benefits as well as Japanese sushi culture. The site also provides tips and insights from local influencers on eating and boosting your luck with them.

The Japan Food Product Overseas Promotion Center (JFOODO) was established by the Japanese Government to dedicate its resources to the promotion of Japanese agricultural, forestry, fishery and food products in overseas markets. Mr. Hiroki Oizumi, Director – General of JFOODO, said, “At JFOODO, we are honoured to provide sea bream, yellowtail and scallop, which are all icons of good fortune in Japan, to the people of Hong Kong again this year as we head into the Lunar New Year. Traditionally, in Japan, these fish are regarded as symbols of good fortune: sea bream for its longevity, yellowtail for progress and scallop for success. We welcome Hongkongers to visit our  Japan’s Good Fortune Fish Tasting pop-up experience to try our superior quality fish and enjoy its delicacy and texture, with the added bonus of bringing good fortune to yourself and your family.”

In Japan, eating fish is not only a long-standing tradition to boost luck, but also a good eating habit to stay healthy. In particular, sea bream, yellowtail and scallop are recognised for both their fortune boosting meaning and nutrition values:

Sea Bream

Since Ebisu-sama, the Japanese god of prosperity, caught a sea bream, it has become widely known as a lucky fish and consequently people in Japan have been serving “sea bream” at celebratory events for a very long time. It is also served as a celebration of long life as some can live in the ocean for more than 40 years. Apart from bringing luck, the sea bream is a healthy choice with low calories but has a high level of protein, which can help maintain and build muscles. This season, the fattiness in sea bream is proportioned delicately throughout the fish thus offering a more exquisite flavour profile.

Yellowtail

Yellowtail has a unique nickname in Japan, which is “Shusseuo”(Promotion Fish). It changes its name as it grows. It is known as a fortune fish since the changing names are associated with being successful (stepping up). Therefore, yellowtail symbolises promotion at work, success and good fortune. In addition, the fish oil of yellowtail is rich in the essential fatty acids, DHA and EPA, offering numerous health benefits such as notably lowering the risk of cardiovascular diseases and fostering brain growth and development for infants. This season, yellowtail is sweeter and juicier than ever before, providing you with the perfect way to enhance your fortune and health.

Scallops

Scallops are written in Japanese as ‘帆立: Hotate ’ as the shape of the scallops is very similar to that of a sailing boat. Thus, scallops carry the meaning of smooth sailing on favourable winds throughout the journey. Moreover, scallops are one of the best sources of mineral substances iron and zinc as well as vitamin B and taurine. In winter, scallops contain a higher level of taurine (subject to seasonal change), which is particularly helpful in recovering from fatigue and strengthening the liver. With Japanese scallops deemed sweeter than ever this season, get your share of success while improving your health now with this delicious and nutritious shellfish from Japan.

Be sure to visit the Japan’s Good Fortune Fish Tasting pop-up experience yourself and sample the delicious menu with our three featured fish.
