Canton Bistro

The newly opened Ocean Park Marriott Hotel is fast becoming a popular dining destination on the south side of Hong Kong Island. In addition to Prohibition, an American Steakhouse restaurant, we now have Canton Bistro, a Cantonese restaurant featuring Shunde cuisine, one of the mainstays of Cantonese food, known for river fish dishes including carp and catfish.

The restaurant joins the city’s ranks of increasingly eco-conscious operators with its emphasis on using sustainable ingredients such as farmed fish and its adoption of green initiatives such as using biodegradable takeaway containers and straws, waste reduction, recycling and separation.

The food is excellent too. We tried the outlet’s dim sum menu for our lunch outing and augmented them with a few of Canton Bistro’s signature dishes. The dim sum dishes included Steamed Soup Dumpling, Abalone, Conopy, Mushrooms ($128 per person), Steamed Shrimp Dumplings, “Har Gau” ($72), Panfried Shrimp, Chinese Chives, Bean Curd Skin ($54), Steamed Minced Beef Balls, Tangerine Peel, Bean Curd Sheet ($54), Deep-fried Pork Croquettes, Dried Shrimp, “Ham Shui Kok” ($54), Doubled-boiled Milk Pudding, Ginger Sauce ($58) and Steamed Brown Sugar Honey Sponge Cake ($58 for four pieces). The Shunde dishes included Chilled Fish Skin, Onion, Ginger, Peanuts, Sesame Oil ($128), Big Head Carp in Two Courses, Pan-fried Fish Head & Braised with Spring Onion, Ginger ($368) which is excellent, Braised E-Fu Noodle, Crab Meat ($168), and Scrambled Fresh Milk, Imperial Bird’s Nest, Crab Roes ($368).

Whether you are visiting Ocean Park nearby or just want to pop in the for a bite, Canton Bistro is well placed, now that the MTR reaches these parts. Give it a visit!
