For Japanese causal or fast-food dining，beef rice bowl，or Gyudon，is certainly one a popular choice here in Hong Kong. Still，Tokyo Chikara Meshi，located at The Forest - a trendy commercial building in Mong Kok，manages to stand out as a value-for-money quality restaurant serving yummy rice bowls and more.
For our visit after lunch hour，the restaurant is still packed with customers. It is is nicely decorated，its airy high ceiling plus modern décor and comfortable seating befitting of a more upscale restaurant.

Tokyo Chikara Meshi hails from Tokyo. The original outlet in Tokyo started out as a modest restaurant serving every-day rice bowls. It grew popular in part because the beef and pork served in the rice bowl were all grilled individually when ordered. The restaurant expanded rapidly to over 100 branches before it started shrinking due to its labour-intensive preparation. The Hong Kong outlet was its first franchised endeavour outside of Japan.

As mentioned，the key to Tokyo Chikara Meshi’s success lies in its on-site preparation and cooking–unlike the use of central kitchens by many fast food outlets，the restaurant grills its meats vegetables individually when ordered，lending a much fresher and flavourful taste for its food.

Popular dishes served that we tried included Grilled Beef Bowl + Onsen Tamago（$55 regular/$65 large）–which is appetising；we like the onsen egg which is Japanese egg slow-cooked in hot water；Salt Grilled Beef Bowl with Salad（$50 regular/$60 large）which is also yummy，and Curry and Rice with Fried Pork Chop（$55），which comes in a generous portion. Side orders are available；we chose Grilled Dumplings（$15/3 pieces），and a very tender and tasty Fried Chicken（$15/3 pieces）. A selection of grilled pork rice bowls is also available at similar prices.

Tokyo Chikara Meshi hits the sweet spot for success by offering freshy prepared，piping hot rice bowls in an attractive setting and at affordable and highly competitive prices，with an decent service to boot. We highly recommend you give Tokyo Chikara Meshi a try.
