Seasons by Olivier E.

Shortly after its opening in 2014, Seasons by Olivier E. joined the prestigious rank of Michelin-awarded restaurants, emerging as a force in modern French cuisine. No stranger to the fragrant harbour, head chef Olivier Elzer began his stint here in 2009, working at the Hong Kong Mandarin Oriental’s Pierre restaurant and then L’Atelier de Joël Robuchon, two of the most respected French eateries in the city. Now with his own brainchild Seasons, he has the freedom to fully flex his creative muscles – the  restaurant is divided into four dining areas inspired by the four seasons, each with different menus that change every one to two months. We sampled a series of well-concocted dishes from the new summer menu for the al fresco Garden Terrace as well as some refreshing cocktails.

In fact, we tasted so many dishes that we cannot mention them all here, but here are some that most impressed our palate – the My French Pizza with Munster Cheese (HK$85), for example, combines the light texture of its thin and crispy pastry with the Munster Cheese’s richness and creaminess, rendering a well-balanced dish. The Crispy Kadaif Shrimps (HK$98), on the other hand, offer a hint of freshness from the sea alongside the delicate Kadaif made from potato julienne.

We also recommend the Grilled Beef Tenderloin Cubes (HK$147), which are first slightly pan-fried on teppanyaki to medium rare and then transferred to a stone bowl with charcoal. Cooked beautifully, these little meaty cubes are tender and succulent on the inside.

Last but not least, while the Prawn/Avocado/Lobster Jelly (HK$130) has a simple look, it’s arguably the most complex dish on our menu – its four layers comprise mashed avocado with chopped red onion, fresh diced prawns, sumptuous jelly made with lobster stock, and a silky cocktail sauce at the top. The interplay of the ingredients is intricate and harmonious, creating a rich yet refreshing taste.

As for the summer cocktails, our favourites are French Riviera (HK$98) and Mockingbird (HK$108) – the former is smooth and refreshing thanks to its fruity components, while the Limoncello and Bourbon whiskey in the latter give it a rich and aromatic flavour. For non-drinkers, there is a selection of summer mocktails in the menu too.

Aside from the quality ingredients and creative modernising of traditional French cuisine, the charm of Seasons by Olivier E. lies in its versatility and accessibility. The fact that it offers affordable dishes as well as exquisite tasting menus for over HK$1,000 is going to help it reach a wide variety of customers. A genuine Michelin-starred experience isn’t as daunting as it seems – in fact, it’s well within your reach.
