maze Grill

The recently opened maze Grill, the famous British steakhouse by Gordan Ramsay, is destined to be a much talked-about dining hotspot in the already burgeoning scene for steakhouses and grills in the city. Located in the Ocean Terminal Dock, the recently opened glasshouse extension at the edge of Ocean Terminal with a panoramic view of Victoria Harbour, the restaurant is the first maze Grill to open outside London in partnership with Dining Concepts, a well-known and expanding dining group which specialises in the development of high-quality dining concepts, with a portfolio of 27 outlets.

Under Head Chef Gareth Packham, who has worked with the Gordon Ramsay Group for seven years, maze Grill serves a combination of its signature dishes from London as well as dishes especially concocted for the Hong Kong outlet.

The décor of the restaurant is casual, contemporary; its warm ambiance contrasts nicely with the expansive floor length glass windows, better to allow unimpeded views of the harbour. A generous terrace outside provides for a gorgeous view of the harbour and Hong Kong Island where guests can relax over drinks.

The restaurant specialty is, of course, a collection of quality British Butchers Cut dry-aged steaks cooked over a charcoal-fired Jasper grill, plus Gordon Ramsay’s world-renowned signature Beef Wellington. For the Hong Kong outlet, maze Grill has created several exclusive dishes. They include the Sliced Snapper, a crunchy Prawn and Chorizo Toast and a Traditional Ploughman’s Pork Pie-carved Table Side.

With such fanfare about the restaurant, our expectation is high, and maze Grill delivers it in style. We started our dinner with two appitisers to share: Grilled Diver Scallops ($158), jalapeno, green apple, coriander and Special Confit Duck & Watermelon Salad ($148), watercress, lotus chips.  The scallops are large, fresh, and tender, with just the right amount of seasoning. The salad comes with a generous helping of shredded slowed-cooked duck that taste zesty and nice.

For the mains, we succumbed to the Cow and Cut, a choice of three 100kg cuts. They cuts included Sirloin (300g for $388), Rib-eye (400g for $488) and Fillet on the Bone (300g, $588). Each steak was perfectly grilled to medium-rare and the meat was excellent. The other main we ordered was Hot Smoked Miso Salmon, sesame cucumbers ($218) which was a welcome contrast to the steaks, with the salmon meat grilled just so to remain tender and moist. We managed somehow to find room for three sides that include French Fries ($48), Seared Foie Gras ($88) and Pastrami & Marrow Bone which is a delicious sauce and goes well with the steaks. Our dessert was the signature Coconut & Dark Chocolate Cremaux with passionfruit sorbet, candied walnuts and a brandy snap, thus completing a highly enjoyable meal.

Between its signature dishes, excellent cuts of steaks and a fantastic view to die for, maze Grill is a perfect place for either a casual or romantic gathering. We highly recommend it, and, book early!
