Mandarin Grill + Bar

Mandarin Grill + Bar, one of Hong Kong’s most esteemed fine-dining restaurants, in the Mandarin Oriental Hong Kong is a gathering place for power breakfasts and lunches for the business elite, and still garners accolades and awards after so many years. A one–Michelin star restaurant for ten years running, Mandarin Grill + Bar, under Chef de Cuisine Simon Guthridge and his team, serves classic grill specialities with a contemporary twist and seasonally inspired dishes, using the best meat, game, seafood and produce ingredients sourced from around the world. The menu offers a large selection of meat and seafood dishes and a range of superbly-concocted desserts.

A few years ago, the restaurant went through a redesign by the institution that is Sir Terence Conran, in which contemporary design features were introduced to lift the look a little, while retaining the traditional, unashamedly posh, clubby atmosphere that its regular guests expect. The restaurant’s classic deep booths and high-back chairs are still there, a fond throwback to yesteryear. There is now a private dining room for up to 14 people, with a frosted window partition giving guests an unimpeded view of the show kitchen.

We took the occasion to sample the Grill’s Classic Tasting Menu ($1,388 per person), a 5-course delight. The selected dishes are mostly the restaurant’s signatures – so we knew we were in for a real treat.

Our dinner started with a winner, the Housemade Applewood Smoked Salmon. As the name suggests, quality Atlantic salmon was carefully aged in-house at the restaurant and smoked from an applewood accented fire. The salmon’s subtle smoky flavour is distinctive, while allowing the meat’s tender taste to come through.

The next appetiser was the Steak Tartare with Sourdough. We are always partial to sourdough bread as it goes well with the tartare. We also liked the texture of the beef and its seasonings. Next came Traditional Lobster Bisque, a staple of any highend steakhouse. The soup is richly flavoured and we appreciated the generous portion of succulent lobster chunks.

Two main courses were available: Slow-roasted USDA Prime Beef Rib and Dover Sole on the Bone. Both are Mandarin Grill’s signature dishes, so we decided to sample them both, and share. We like our beef medium rare, which is perfect for the beef rib. The slow-cooking brings out the beef flavour fully while keeping the meat tender and juicy. The Dover sole is also superb, the fillet’s texture is firm, and it tastes moist and succulent.

We rounded up our dinner with Custard Tart and Banoffee Cake, both light enough that we were able to finish them all, as a fitting close to an excellent meal.

Mandarin Grill + Bar is still a first choice for discerning diners in search of a fine meal. Many a major transaction has been sealed over the dining tables of this august restaurant.
