Savour & Compare: 3 Cupcake Shops in Hong Kong

We can hardly recall when cupcakes has become the "it" snack in Hong Kong.  As we started seeing more and more bakeries showcasing their collection with different colourful frosting and toppings, we choose three of the most prestigious cupcake shops in Hong Kong and took their signature products to the test: who has the style? the flavours? the colours?

Twelve Cupcakes

As the name suggests, there are 12 basic cupcake flavours offered daily with special flavours offered on a limited basis. Originated from Singapore, Twelve Cupcakes have already expanded their map in Hong Kong and other locations in Asia. We have chosen the shop's signature Red Velvet and Rainbow Vanilla cupcakes; the former is a beetroot cake and the later is a classic vanilla cake both covered with vanilla cream cheese frostings. Both look appealingly sweet (particularly for young ladies) but the amount of sugary are just right for our sweet tooth.

Sift Patisserie

Sift's cupcakes exude simplistic elegance - nothing too fancy or too eye-catchy: quality is the key. We know their chocolate flavours are signature classics so we chose Strawberry and Coconut instead.  A little stronger strawberry kick would be perfect for the the Strawberry flavour; whereas the snowball-like coconut toppings turned out to be our favourite cupcake flavour!  The chewy cake plus melt-in-your-mouth coconut cream cheese frosting was a flavour too yummy to resist.

Natural Chiffon

Natural Chiffon's cupcakes are made to capture your eyeballs away from everything:  their toppings are filled with glitters and colours and flowers and cutie letters and characters. We selected Honey and Green Tea from the garden of flavours, and both flowery toppings are too pretty and tempting for us to put into our mouth.  Both presents a stronger buttery taste which might be a bit too sweet for people who do not have strong sugary obsessions.
