Hong Kong’s largest private museum, Liang Yi Museum, presents its educational seminar series – Liang Yi Talks to further deepen the understanding and appreciation of the exceptional craftsmanship of Asian antiquities. Held on the first Tuesday of every month, Liang Yi Talks invites artists, collectors and academics from around the world to discuss topics of interest within the field of culture, history and crafts.
For the inauguration of Liang Yi Talks, the museum partnered with Asian Art Hong Kong to present the artist Fung Ming Chip to shed light on his creative process and journey as a contemporary calligrapher and ink painter. Held at Liang Yi Museum in April, Fung introduced his work, which involves deconstructing the ancient art of Chinese calligraphy, and how he reassembles it in his own unique, modern fashion. Based in Hong Kong, Fung has featured in some remarkable exhibitions around the world, including at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
During the month of May, Liang Yi Museum collaborated with the Chinese University, sponsoring a Japanese master of kodo, or Japanese incense culture, to give a lecture on the art’s 500 year history, as well as a live demonstration. In June, Dr. Florian Knothe, director of The Museum and Art Gallery at Hong Kong University, gave a lecture on the influence of Ming and Qing classical furniture on western furniture designers such as Thomas Chippendale.
Highlight speakers of the 2014 programme includes:
- Veronique Chagnon-Burke, academic director of Christie’s Education, on the origins of house museums (July; held on Tuesday 8 July due to national holiday);
- Scholar Oi Ling Chiang, founder of Oi Ling Antiques gallery and the Chinese Cultural Studies Centre, will bring her expert insights into the “King of Fanglei”, a particular Bronze Age vessel from 1600BC (August);
