62 boats enjoyed perfect conditions under blue skies and sunshine in Hong Kong’s Victoria Harbour as they competed in the Tomes Cup presented by Old Mutual. Organised by Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club, the race forms part of the Club’s Top Dog Trophy Series which combines the season’s pursuit races to crown a winning helm or ‘Top Dog’ for the year.
With 10 to 12kts consistent easterly, Race Officer Gareth Williams opted for a Club line start at Kellett Island and a course taking the fleet to all the regular harbour marks before finishing them as close to 1630hrs as possible.
The breeze held steady at 10kts for most of the race, with Pandora Windfall holding on to a slim lead over Ruffian Schannuleke until the last windward leg, when Etchells 1364 caught the pair and Frank van Kempen took the lead, holding on until the finish gun at 16:27:51. Etchells Easy Tiger took the runner up spot, with Flying Fifteen Tchaikoffsky in third.
At a packed prizegiving washed down with Mount Gay Rum, Jax Coco and Peroni Beer, Kimmy Yuen from Official Apparel, Thomas Pink, awarded the prizes.
